Bloody Waters Cover Contest

Seven students from Mrs. Christie's 7th and 8th grade English classes entered art work for the cover of the third in my stories about Chris "Muddy" Waters and his Amish friend Joshua Beiler. This book ties together events in the first two. That doesn't mean that there will be no more. To understand the cover art, you should proably download the synopsis of the book that I gave to the students. Click here to see the art work.

Alcona County Cold Case

On October 26, 1994, hunters discovered the skeletal remains of a woman in Curtis Township, Alcona County, Michigan, in the woods off Bamfield Road, south of Alcona Dam. Since then she has remained unidentified and the case has been in the hands of Alcona County Sheriff Deputy Nathanial Leeseberg since 2008.

I learned about this case during a ride-along with Deputy Leeseberg on June 2, 2017. This picture and the information I am including in this article appeared in the Alcona County Review, Vol. 146, No. 23, June 7, 2017.

This 3D rendering was done by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The woman, referred to as Jane Doe, is described as a white female between the ages of 30 to 50. She is believed to have light brown hair, weighed 135 pounds and was approximately 62 inches tall. She also had a wide gap between her two front teeth.

Jane Doe's information is accessible online on the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) website https://namus.gov

Anyone with information regarding the identity of Jane Doe is asked to contact Deputy Leeseberg at the Alcona Sheriff's Office by calling (989) 724-6271, by Fax at (989) 724-6181 or by email nleeseberg@alcona-county.net

Muddy Waters Hits It Big!

Posted April 28 2016

In the fall of 2016, I donated a copy of each of my young adult books to the Alcona Schools Library. The books were Muddy Waters and The Witches of Hibbard Corners. In early March 2016, my publisher forwarded me the following email:
… I am a teacher at Alcona Community Schools in Lincoln, MI. Mr. Cameron dropped off a few of his books at our school last year and they ended up in my middle school library. One of my 7th grade students recently read Muddy Waters and loved the book. He wrote an email to Mr. Cameron and would like to see if it would be possible to get it to him.
Here is the student's email:
Dear Douglas Cameron,

I read one of your books called "Muddy Waters" a couple weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I liked it so much because it was about Alcona county and was kinda near my house. I have even been down the same roads as in the book. I was hoping to read some of your other books and was also wondering if you're ever in the area, maybe you could stop by at my school and talk to us about your books.
When I responded, I got this return email from the teacher:
Keedon will be so excited to hear from you! He couldn't stop talking about your book. For being somewhat of a reluctant reader, it was awesome to see him so excited about a book. We would love to have you into our classroom. We can set up a day in April or May to have you in!
This is just one young person. But that makes my writing of the book worth it.

I have set up a date May 20 to meet with her two classes individually. I will answer questions and read a chapter or two from Angry Waters, the sequel. What's is more, my publisher and I have agreed to have a contest with the students making drawings for the cover of Angry Waters and we will use the best one as the cover.
